Budapest 1

Train station: exterior
Train station: interior
Vajdahunyad castle: erected in 1896 to celebrate the 1000 year founding anniversary of Hungary.
The Basilica: commenced in 1851 and completed in 1905, Neo-Renaissance.
Parliament House: built between 1884 and 1902, Neo-Gothic.

Many level changes in Budapest. Water and mountain easily accessible. Enjoy the climb!

"They made a statue of us. And put it on a mountain top. Now tourists come and stare at us. Blow bubbles with their gum. Take photographs have fun." Regina Spektor

The great thing about architecture is looking up from the street level and seeing its uniformity and wholeness . Good architecture does not alienate, it does not apologize. People are fragile. They break and are not always fixable, but architecture represents ideals, goals, symbols that are immutable.

  1. Dearest Wenwen,
I am thoroughly enjoying your blog. It is a refreshing take on architecture that has surely been photographed and discussed many times. However, your photographs and sketches are neither boring nor mundane. There is something about Western European architecture that fascinates me, as a tourist and as the child of a native. Perhaps it is the way in which the imposing buildings and daunting monuments demand attention. They reflect an “Old World” charm and romanticism of a continent obsessed with riches, power and prestige (I guess not much has changed since then!).
I hope you are enjoying your travels and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

    Your friend for always,
    Jessica

  2. Wenwen,

having been to budapest, i think you fully capture the beauty and charm of that city. The way it invites you in while reminding you of all the tough times it has survived. I'd say the only bit you missed out is the incredible food and many many many restaurants dedicated to it.

Your drawings and sketches are particularly beautiful and capture the city even better than the photography :)

I can't wait to discover other european gems through your art

    Love,

    Marion

  4. Eastern Europe is my fav. Budapest looks like a lovely city, with a nice blend of architecture and natural scenery like mountains and such. I like the church there, as well as the other pictures.
